The Republic Austria (1918-1927)

With the collapse of the empire after the First World War and the abdication of emperor Charles I, Austria was reduced to the main, mostly German-speaking areas of the empire and adopted the name The Republic of German-Austria.

Politics

This period was marked by successive changes in government and the adoption of a new Constitution (1920). The Constitution provided the establishment of a democratic federal republic, in which the law emanated from the people.

Violent confrontations between those with left-wing and right-wing views also took place, leading to the July Revolt of 1927 and the Austrian Civil War of 1934.

Economy

In 1922, a League of Nations commission agreed on a program of international financial support that brought currency stabilization and a balanced budget led to economic reconstruction. Thus, during the 1920s Austria recovered from the war but in the early 1930s like the rest of the world Austria suffered in the depression.
